Welcome

NEW PETITION! ALL MEMBERS SHOULD READ AND SIGN!

We, members in good standing of AFSCME Local 2401 hereby express our concerns about ongoing attacks against our Union and our rights as employees by the D.C. Government through reductions in force, reorganizations and realignments. Our Local has suffered attacks at Health Care Finance, CSSR, CFSA, and OCP.

Each month, our 1500+ members pay $35.18 in Union dues. District Council 20 gets 60% of these dues, or more than $21 .

We have requested District 20 to help to defend these attacks against us, but its leadership has refused to financially support our members in arbitrations and lawsuits and to financially support our fight against a CSSD “restructuring.” Local 2401 has been forced to defend itself and to spend its limited money to protect our members. Our local receives only $3.52 per member each month.

Without any financial support from District Council 20, we have stood up to the government at a great cost to the Local. We have filed a lawsuit in federal court and defeated the District’s motion to dismiss our case, forced the D.C. Attorney General’s office to reverse privatization of child support jobs, cancel a $5 million private contract and defended our members in two critical arbitrations.

We members of Local 2401 demand that District 20 reimburse Local 2401 for expenditures that it has incurred in litigation, arbitration, and grievances on behalf of our members.

We demand that any future dues District Council 20 collects from Local 2401 be deposited in a separate escrow account for our legal defense until our concerns can be addressed.

PRESS RELEASE:

AFSCME Local 2401 Supports Occupy Wall Street, Occupy DC and Occupy Baltimore

10/25/11

For Immediate Release:

The following statement is from AFSCME Local 2401 (Washington, DC) President Sabrina Brown and the 2401 Officers and Executive Board:

As the Occupy Wall Street protests continue to grow in New York City and spread to cities across the country, including Washington DC and  Baltimore, AFSCME Local 2401 members stand in solidarity with the brave brothers and sisters who are in the streets, raising their voices and refusing to back down to the small minority who are killing the American dream for millions of working class people.

For years, DC Public Workers have endured wage and benefit cuts, layoffs, and the systematic dismantling of the public sector workforce in favor of privatization.  Teachers, social workers, clerks, and all types of workers who provide vital services to the people of DC have suffered while a tiny minority continue to watch their wealth skyrocket.  Union members, with a proud history of fighting for fair treatment and decent wages in DC and Maryland, have been particularly targeted for attacks by opportunistic politicians and union-busting management.

Unemployment continues to devastate the DC and Maryland working class.  Public schools are neglected, and replaced by privately run schools.  Desperately needed tax money is given to developers who continue the planned gentrification project to change the city’s “culture”.  All show the inherent racism of a system that values profits over peoples’ needs.

We encourage all members of Local 2401 and everyone in DC, Baltimore and the surrounding areas to join the occupation of Washington every day until real change comes.
